Rioja, More than Just Wine

By Gina Bang

A few hours north of Madrid, you’ll find stretches of rolling hills topped with vineyards creating picturesque landscapes. However, wine production in Spain is a serious business and a deep passion for many of the people I encountered. Some wine makers explained that they have Tempranillo running in their veins like their forefathers. Others explained that they were in the business world, but always had the vineyards calling their names. Younger generations were most excited about wine tourism and sharing their piece of the world with visitors both domestically and internationally.

Piedmont or Piemonte?

By Mike Dodd

The Italians say pee-ay-MON-tay. In either case, it’s worth a trip. The Piemonte is another overlooked region by US travelers, joining the growing list of other underrated areas like Donegal, Ireland, Galicia in Spain, Brittany in France, Bremen in Germany, and Cornwall in England.

In any event, it’s a shame that more Americans have not found their way here, considering its’ short driving distance from Milan, and it’s major city Turin, offers excellent air connections.

6 Days in the Galapagos

By Michael Field

I was ecstatic to explore the Galapagos Islands for the first time this past month. Famous for up close and personal wildlife watching and stunning landscapes, the Galapagos Islands has always been a dream destination for me.

20170909_152750.jpgThe journey to the archipelago begins in either Quito or Guayaquil. It’s always best to spend 2 nights on the Ecuador mainland to make absolutely certain that you don’t miss your cruise departure due to unforeseen flight delays.

Quito is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and a wonderfully diverse city boasting rich tradition in old town, superb museums, and nearby natural wonders including the Cotopaxi volcano, Mindo cloud forest, and Papallacta hot springs. The Otavalo Handicraft Market is another memorable day trip, just 1.5 hrs from the city.

Guayaquil has less fanfare but recent investment has really cleaned up the Malecón (waterfront) and the seafood is scrumptious. I highly recommend visiting the art district of Barrio Las Peñas, where you can enjoy colorful architecture and exhibits from local artist
